Vol. 574 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mental Health Services.

Dan Neville

Question:

90 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will establish an independent clinical review to examine all aspects of the care and treatment in the course of the treatment of a person (details supplied) who died by suicide in ward 5B of the Mid-Western Regional Hospital. [27390/03]

I wish to extend my condolences to the family concerned on their tragic loss. Every sudden death, from whatever cause, of a patient in psychiatric care is regrettable. My Department is awaiting a full report from the Mid-Western Health Board on the care and treatment received by the patient. I am not, therefore, in a position at this time to comment on the circumstances surrounding the death or to decide if further investigation will be required.
