Vol. 574 No. 5

Written Answers. - General Medical Services Scheme.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

111 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health and Children when he intends to publish the report commissioned from a company (details supplied) on the GMS, which he received on 6 February 2003; if the report has been brought to Government; if it is intended to implement the recommendations of the report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27557/03]

A draft copy of the Deloitte & Touche consultancy review of governance and accountability mechanisms in the GMS schemes was received by my Department in February 2003. While the review was being considered by officials in my Department, the reports of the Commission on Financial Management and Control Systems in the Health Service and the Audit of Structures and Functions in the Health System were published. These reports are also known as the Brennan and Prospectus reports. Since the contents and recommendations of both of these reports are relevant to the subject matter of the GMS review, my Department asked Deloitte & Touche to update the draft in this light, having regard to the latest financial data from the GMS payments board. The final draft of this review has been received by my Department. I intend to bring this review to the Government as soon as possible, at which time its publication and implementation will be discussed.
