Vol. 574 No. 5

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31. I propose to call the Deputies in the order in which they submitted notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the failure by Government to provide essential resources to regional cancer units, which has resulted in inadequate services to cancer patients. Seven years after its designation as a regional cancer unit for the south-east serving a population of 420,000 people, Waterford Regional Hospital still does not have a designated oncology ward or designated palliative care beds and only has a day ward suitable for eight to ten patients when the hospital treats 40 to 50 patients daily. It also has inadequate pharmacy facilities for the constitution and storage of chemotherapy drugs which require that such drugs are transported from Dublin every day and grossly inadequate facilities for patients and their families which cause them terrible hardship at a time when they need every help.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the need to determine the full range of infrastructure projects to be included by the Government in the proposed critical infrastructure (Dublin metro) Bill and whether these will include mass incineration plants and enormous projects such as the proposed 2,500 acre virtual city referred to in newspapers today.

Having considered the matters raised, I do not consider them to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motions.
