Vol. 574 No. 5

Written Answers. - Abortion Statistics.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

116 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children if the Central Statistics Office will endeavour by independent research to determine the annual number of abortions involving Irish women. [26112/03]

I am advised by the Central Statistics Office that it does not intend to commission research into the number of abortions each year involving Irish women. Statistics regarding the number of Irish women who have abortions in the UK abortion clinics are collected by the UK Department of Health and Social Services. It is not possible to quantify the exact number of Irish women who opt for abortions in the UK or elsewhere, as some Irish women may not give their actual address in order to protect their confidentiality.
