Vol. 575 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Signage.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

179 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport his views on whether the proliferation of road signs is causing confusion; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28023/03]

The provision of road traffic signs is a matter for each road authority under section 95 of the Road Traffic Act 1961. That section provides that all traffic signs must be in accordance with either traffic signs regulations in the case of regulatory signs or, with directions issued in respect of all other traffic signs.

The traffic signs manual, published in December 1996 is a comprehensive guide to road authorities in relation to the design, content and provision of all traffic signs. Use of the manual is intended over time to lead to greater uniformity of practice and to the creation of a more consistent approach to signing generally.
