Vol. 575 No. 1

Written Answers. - Refugee Advisory Board.

Ciarán Cuffe

Question:

198 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress that has been made with regard to the setting up of the refugee advisory board; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27872/03]

Section 7A of the Refugee Act 1996 provides for the establishment of a board consisting of, inter alia, a chairperson and 15 ordinary members.

The Government must continue to have primary responsibility for policy on asylum seekers and refugees but we do not enjoy a monopoly of wisdom in this area. I am not convinced that the present legislative provision provides a suitable framework in which to move forward. Accordingly, I am considering whether an alternative framework might be available that would be capable of making a value added contribution to asylum and refugee matters and, in particular, be of benefit to those genuinely in need of protection.
