Vol. 575 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

85 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Transport further to his statement of 20 October 2003, the plans he is considering to make the sale of end of use cars to minors a criminal offence, in view of the number of accidents and deaths caused by these vehicles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27834/03]

The Road Traffic Act 1968 sets out certain provisions for the control of the supply of vehicles. These provisions prohibit, inter alia, the delivery of a vehicle in such a condition that it does not comply with the requirements of regulations regarding the use of vehicles in a public place or on a public road.

I will consider in conjunction with the Attorney General the question of introducing controls on the sale of vehicles generally including to persons under the licensing age established under the Road Traffic Acts.

Question No. 86 answered with Question No. 28.
