Since 1999 candidates have been allowed to take the Scrúdú le hAghaidh Cáilíochta sa Ghaeilge – SCG – in four modules. This facilitates candidates who wish to do so to attempt modules separately at different sittings. Candidates who pass in any one module of the examination are exempt from that module for a period not exceeding five years. The examinations are held in four centres, Athlone, Dublin, Cork and Sligo, twice each year, generally in April and again in October. Statistics are not available for the 2003 SCG examinations as a whole since results are not yet available for the October examinations for which 291 candidates sat.
In April 2003, a total of 308 candidates sat for the SCG. Some 197 candidates sat for paper one, of whom 45 obtained a pass; 171 candidates sat for paper two, of whom 46 obtained a pass; 190 candidates sat for the aural module, of whom 56 obtained a pass; and 164 candidates sat for the oral examination, of whom 81 obtained a pass.
