Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - Community Care.

Enda Kenny

Question:

237 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason the community nursing unit in Birr, County Offaly, has not to date been opened; if the requirement of ?500,000 on an annual basis for staffing will be made available immediately; if the elderly patients currently housed in old unsuitable and obsolete buildings can be transferred to the community unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28198/03]

The opening date of the newly constructed community nursing unit in Birr, County Offaly, will be determined by the availability of the revenue and capital funding requirements for new developments in respect of services for older people.

I have viewed the new facility and requested submissions from the Midland Health Board, which I have now received. I have also requested health board officials to meet me shortly.
