Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Accidents.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

267 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Transport the number of traffic incidents which have occurred on a route, details supplied, in County Cork; the number of fatalities in 2000, 2001, 2002 and to date in 2003; and if priority for further funding will be given for this route. [28133/03]

Statistics relating to road accidents, based on information provided by the Garda Síochána, are published by the National Roads Authority in its annual road accident facts reports. The most recent report is for 2001 and that report, along with reports relating to previous years, are available in the Oireachtas Library.

The number of traffic accidents on the N73 in the years 2000 and 2001 was one and two accidents respectively. The reports do not identify accidents on a specific stretch of the road in question.

Figures relating to the number of traffic accidents on national routes in 2002 are not yet fully analysed and authenticated. They will be set out in the road accident facts for 2002 which will be published by the National Roads Authority. Statistics relating to 2003 will not be available until the report for that year is published. The number of road deaths nationally in 2000, 2001 and 2002 are 415, 411 and 376 respectively. The number of road deaths to 24 November 2003 is 313.

The allocation of funding for the national road routes is a matter for the National Roads Authority, NRA, and the local authority having regard to the funding available for the national road programme.
