Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Charlie O'Connor

Question:

291 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will liaise with the Garda authorities in Dublin south west regarding the need to deal with the problem of alcohol abuse in public parks; the measures that can be taken in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28196/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that gardaí in Dublin south west are aware of the problems with alcohol abuse and its associated anti-social behaviour in public parks. They have put measures in place to deal with them.

I am assured that the policing of public parks, particularly by foot and mountain bike patrols, have been highly successful in dealing with the problems mentioned by the Deputy. The Garda will continue to give the issue high priority.

The Garda also make full use of the existing legislation, such as the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994 and the local authority by-laws, prohibiting the consumption of alcohol in public parks, when tackling these matters. The force, in conjunction with representatives from local authorities, park development officials and communities, are involved in public park projects to keep parks safe for the enjoyment of local communities and free from anti-social elements.
