Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Equipment.

John Dennehy

Question:

305 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will consider making it mandatory for all interviews that take place in Garda stations to be video recorded to alleviate disputes over evidence when cases reach trial; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28381/03]

The introduction of a system for the video recording of suspect interviews in Garda stations is virtually complete. I refer the Deputy to my response today to Question No. 56. I assume that the Deputy is referring to the video recording of witness statements made in Garda stations. At present I am examining the issues surrounding the taking of witness statements generally. If I have any proposals they will be announced in the usual way.
