Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

316 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the extent to which extra Garda foot patrols can be provided, in view of the current strength of the force; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28411/03]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources, including personnel, that great emphasis is placed on foot patrols by local management within each Garda region. It is the policy to ensure that as many available personnel are engaged on foot patrols. As further resources become available they are assigned to each such duty.

Foot patrols are continually reviewed to ensure they address the policing needs of an area. In particular, foot patrols are carried out at retail centres, areas of high density traffic and areas where public order issues frequently arise. In addition to normal foot patrols, increased foot patrols are also in place by way of various operations and initiatives, which are ongoing.

The Garda authorities have also informed me that the personnel strength of the force as at 19 November was 11,875. A further 164 probationer gardaí are due to be attested to the force on 27 November and allocated to their respective stations on 28 November.
