Question:

319 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he proposes to take initiatives to prevent the intimidation of witnesses; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28414/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 318 and 319 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that in the years 2002 and 2003, a total of 21 investigations into alleged witness intimidation have taken place or are under way. I am further informed that 15 people have been charged to date arising from these investigations.

I am satisfied that strong legislation exists to deal with witness intimidation in the provisions of sections 39 to 41 of the Criminal Justice Act 1999. I have consulted with the Garda authorities and they are also of this view.
