Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - Mayo Landslide.

Michael Ring

Question:

343 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if he received a copy of the report on the landslide in north Mayo; and the measures his Department is taking to compensate the householders in the area. [28328/03]

I refer to the replies to Question No. 3 of 16 October 2003 and to Questions Nos. 312 and 314 of 12 November 2003 which set out my Department's engagement with this matter and my commitment to ensure appropriate assistance to Mayo County Council in their efforts to assist local people and restore the infrastructure of the area.

A detailed report recently submitted by Mayo County Council on the landslides in north Mayo is being examined in my Department and a response will issue to the council as soon as possible.

In the case of families who have been forced to leave their homes because of the landslides, my Department is recouping the council 90% of the cost of providing emergency accommodation. In addition, with regard to the humanitarian aid scheme being implemented by the Office of Public Works through the Red Cross, I understand that assessment by the Red Cross of all aid applications received from householders under the scheme is almost complete and that payments will be determined in the very near future.
