Vol. 575 No. 4

Written Answers. - Housing Aid for the Elderly.

Jack Wall

Question:

72 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if he will advise local authorities to sanction radon remediation work as a qualifying improvement to the homes of elderly people under the essential repairs grant scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [28462/03]

As indicated in the reply to Question No. 683 of 4 November 2003, it would not be practicable in the current budgetary circumstances to provide for Exchequer funding of a radon remediation grant scheme in respect of domestic dwellings. There are no proposals therefore to modify the essential repairs grant scheme, which is funded at a rate of two thirds by the Exchequer and one third by local authorities, as proposed in the question.
