Vol. 575 No. 4

Written Answers. - Departmental Estimates.

Joan Burton

Question:

79 Ms Burton asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if he will make a statement on the Estimate for his Department for 2004. [28429/03]

The 2004 Estimate for my Department reflects the Government's spending priorities for housing, water and waste water services, and local roads and services and is consistent with the Government's objectives of maintaining investing in infrastructure to assist continued economic and social progress.

In particular, we are prioritising funding in housing to tackle disadvantage and to assist the most vulnerable in our society. 2004 will see an increase of €33 million in investment in local authority and social housing resulting in local authority housing starts increasing to 5,000. This represents 500 more starts than 2003.
