Vol. 575 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Ellis

Question:

117 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason his Department has refused to provide the necessary remedial teaching for a person (details supplied) in County Leitrim who was sanctioned for same in March 2003; and if his Department will now provide the service. [28596/03]

The special education section of my Department considered an application for resource teaching support for the pupil in question. The National Educational Psychological Service reviewed the application and the supporting professional documentation provided. The outcome of the review was that the application did not meet the criteria outlined in the relevant Department circular and, accordingly, no resources could be approved. This information was conveyed to the school authorities on 28 April 2003.

I advise the Deputy that pupils with specific learning disability are generally catered for on an integrated basis in ordinary primary schools by the learning support teacher service. The school in question has the services of a shared learning support teacher. The principal of the school has overall responsibility for the school's learning support programme and the selection of the pupils to participate in the programme.
