Vol. 576 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

John Bruton

Question:

203 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the building funds he will be providing to St. Fintina's post-primary school, Longwood, Enfield, County Meath, in 2004; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the school is being run in prefabricated structures which have been in use since 1968 and that the extra accommodation requested for 2004, will mean that limited recreational areas will be further reduced; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that enrolment of students has risen from 97 students in 2000 to 162 students in 2003 and that the projected enrolment for 2004 will be more than 190 students; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that a recent survey conducted by the school indicates sufficient children transferring to second level education in the locality during the next ten years to sustain at least a 400 pupil school; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that all second level schools in the area are struggling to facilitate increasing numbers, that the parents and teachers are seeking to build a modern facility including classrooms for all specialist subjects, a gymnasium, and sports facilities and that they are negotiating with a view to secure a site of suitable size; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29177/03]

My Department has recently received an updated application from County Meath VEC on behalf of St. Fintina's post-primary school, Longwood, for the provision of additional temporary accommodation for September 2004 and the provision of a new school building in the long-term.

My Department is aware that student numbers have been increasing at this school during recent years and, in this regard, the school planning section of the Department is examining both the short and long-term accommodation needs of the school. Contact will be made with the school's management authority as soon as a decision has been taken on how best its needs can be met into the future.
