Vol. 576 No. 1

Written Answers. - Television Licence Fee.

John Dennehy

Question:

216 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he will consider opening discussions with the providers of cable television with a view to having them act as agents for collection of the television licence fee, with a view to increasing compliance level; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29296/03]

Section 76 of the Postal and Telecommunications Services Act 1983 provides for the appointment of An Post to act as my agent to collect television licence fees. I have no proposals at present to amend this legislative provision.

However, I am considering longer-term measures in the area of licence fee collection. The question of putting the licence fee collection process out to contract is one of the possible initiatives that will be explored in this context.
