Vol. 576 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Finian McGrath

Question:

290 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of house break-ins in the Coolock area at the latest date for which figures are available; the number of people charged for these crimes; the amount of drugs confiscated in the area; the number of people charged; and if an increase in the number of garda foot patrols will be provided in the Coolock area of Dublin. [28985/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that 136 burglaries have been committed in homes in the Coolock area in the year 2003 to date. This is a substantial drop on the 2002 figure which was 234 on the same date last year. Nineteen suspects have been arrested and charged with a number of these crimes and further investigations are taking place into the unsolved burglaries.

I am also informed that drugs with a total estimated value of €20,883,370 have been seized in the area, and that 278 people have been charged with drug related offences. These figures are provisional and subject to verification. The Coolock area continues to benefit from a substantial policing programme designed to cope with crime patterns in the area. Garda management continues to review the level of policing to ensure that a sufficient and appropriate allocation of manpower is deployed at all times in the Coolock district.
