Vol. 576 No. 1

Written Answers. - Election Management System.

David Stanton

Question:

327 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the way in which those who are visually impaired or those who are blind will be facilitated to vote using the electronic voting procedures proposed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29196/03]

Since its first use in 2002, improvements have been made to the voting machine to improve its user friendliness for the visually impaired and other users. The new features include an increase in the size and legibility of candidate's details, the use of larger preference numbers and brighter displays for better visibility and the use of a redesigned "cast vote" button following consultations with the National Disability Authority and National Council for the Blind in Ireland. A voter with a visual impairment may also avail of the companion voting facility or may be assisted by the presiding officer.
