Vol. 576 No. 1

Written Answers. - Job Losses.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

133 Mr. Howlin asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the fact that approximately half of the 230 workers who lost their employment when a company (details supplied) closed in Thurles two years ago are still unemployed; if a task force is engaged in efforts to find an alternative industry to replace this company; if she envisages that a replacement industry will be put in place in the near future; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [28845/03]

I am aware of the unemployment situation in the Thurles area, including job losses from the closure of the GMX plant. A concentrated effort involving the State development agencies and other interests is being made to address this situation.

The Thurles interagency task force completed its work and submitted its report to me in September 2002. Follow-up action on the report has been actively pursued by the State development agencies and other interests. The downturn in the global economy has adversely affected the flow of foreign direct investment to Ireland but current indicators are more positive for investment and economic recovery. A major marketing effort by the Thurles marketing group is under way with a view to promoting the attractiveness of Thurles as an investment location. IDA Ireland, Shannon Development and the Tipperary North County Enterprise Board are active participants in this initiative, together with local development interests. In this regard, the first phase of the development of the Tipperary Technology Park by Shannon Development is now completed and should enhance the attractiveness of the area for new industry.
