Vol. 576 No. 3

Written Answers. - Criminal Assets Bureau.

John Bruton

Question:

125 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he plans to extent the list of crimes for which CAB powers may be used. [29611/03]

Sections 4 and 5 of the Criminal Assets Bureau Act 1996 states that the role of the bureau is in relation to assets derived from criminal activity. The Act does not specify a list of criminal activities to which the Criminal Assets Bureau's powers are limited.

In addition, the Proceeds of Crime Act 1996, which sets out the procedures for the making of orders for the preservation and disposal of assets, does not contain a list of specific crimes to which the provisions of the Act relate.

The proposed Proceeds of Crime (Amendment) Bill will strengthen operation of the Act generally.
