Vol. 576 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Jack Wall

Question:

83 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science if a student has been granted resource teaching hours, and that student has to change school due to family reasons, if the student is entitled to the same resource teaching hours in their new school, considering that the hours were first given due to the need for same and the fact that the pupil's needs have not changed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29585/03]

Resource teaching support is granted on the basis that an application for such support satisfies the criteria outlined in the relevant Department circular. The need for the level of support sanctioned should be reviewed periodically in the context of a pupil's emerging needs.

In September 2003, my Department issued circular 24/03 to all primary schools. This circular contained advice to schools as to how applications for special educational needs, SEN, support such as that described by the Deputy might be dealt with. The circular also clarified the flexibility that schools could employ in the most effective deployment of SEN resources. Should the Deputy have a specific case in mind and wishes my Department to examine it, he might provide details to the special education section of my Department.
