Vol. 577 No. 1

Written Answers. - Northern Ireland Issues.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

56 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will report on his recent meeting with Mr. Richard Haass, the US special envoy. [30430/03]

On 4 December, I met President Bush's special envoy to Northern Ireland, Ambassador Richard Haass, to update him on recent developments in Northern Ireland, including our contacts with the political parties following the elections. Ambassador Haass briefed me on his own recent meetings in Northern Ireland, and our discussions also covered several current international issues of mutual interest.

I took the opportunity to express the Government's deep appreciation to President Bush and the US Administration for its continuing support in our efforts towards the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. I also thanked Ambassador Haass for his exceptional personal contribution to the peace process. The dedication and commitment displayed by him, particularly at critical junctures, have been of invaluable support.
