Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - Common Fisheries Policy.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

383 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the details of the infringement proceedings opened by the European Commission against Spain and the UK for failure to enforce fisheries policy in relation to shortcomings in inspections and monitoring of fishing and landing activities, validating and cross-checking of data, follow up of infringements and applying deterrent sanctions against wrongdoers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31287/03]

As I have previously advised the House, I consider that control and enforcement is an essential element for the effective implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy. The newly reformed CFP, agreed at last December's Fisheries Council, provides for strengthened control and enforcement measures and I fully welcome that development.

In so far as the particular issue raised by the Deputy is concerned, the European Commission has issued a statement outlining details of this matter. I am arranging to forward a copy of this statement to the Deputy for his information.
