Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - Medical Inquiries.

Damien English

Question:

422 Mr. English asked the Minister for Health and Children if the Dr. Neary Inquiry will be a public inquiry as requested by Patient Focus; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30746/03]

I again met representatives from Patient Focus on the 25 November, 2003. I informed the group that Judge Maureen Harding Clark has been selected to chair an inquiry into the issues raised by the medical council's report into the practice of Dr. Michael Neary.

The format of the inquiry and its terms of reference are the subject of discussion between my Department and the Office of the Attorney General and I expect to be in a position to bring recommendations before Cabinet shortly. I will be meeting Patient Focus again tomorrow, 17 December 2003, to apprise it of progress in this regard.
