Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Denis Naughten

Question:

510 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí he intends to recruit from the current panel; the period which this panel will run for; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30794/03]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources, including personnel, that recruitment to the Garda Síochána is processed by the Office of the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners, which placed 2,482 candidates on the 2002 panel.

The January 2004 intake to the Garda College will consist of applicants from the 2002 competition. This will be the last batch of candidates from that panel. It is the intention of the Garda authorities to notify all candidates placed on the 2002 panel as to whether they have been successful or not.

The Office of the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners is interviewing candidates from the 2003 competition for Garda trainees. It is anticipated that the first candidates from the 2003 competition will commence training in April 2004.
