Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - Irish Language.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin

Question:

562 Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the details of the current practice regarding the drafting of legislation in the Irish language; if the promised improvements towards the publication of legislation simultaneously in Irish and English have been introduced. [30904/03]

Responsibility for translation into Irish of Acts of the Oireachtas enacted in English rests with the Houses of the Oireachtas. No special requirements regarding Irish language competency apply when recruiting staff for the Office of the Attorney General. The office is committed to encouraging the development of skills and proficiencies in the Irish language within it, as well as to supporting and participating in Civil Service Irish language training initiatives. The office has recently agreed a language training policy which gives the Irish language a high priority. It is intended to introduce the policy with effect from January 2004.
