Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

85 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the suggestion from the INTO that teachers trained outside Ireland should be given an additional five year breathing space to sit the Irish language examination, SCG, which they are required to pass to continue teaching; his views on the suggestion made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30913/03]

I am aware of correspondence from the INTO seeking an extension of the time limit for teachers trained outside Ireland to pass the SCG examination. A review of the SCG has taken place and my Department has recently received the report from the review working group. This report is under consideration. My Department will discuss the report's recommendations with the relevant bodies in due course. The INTO suggestion will be considered in the context of these discussions.
