Vol. 577 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

98 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science the response that he has given to a recent call by the INTO and IFUT for the suspension of all further intake to an on-line teacher training course pending a full examination of the accreditation process and the suitability of email learning for the preparation of teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31837/03]

I am aware of concerns in relation to my decision to recognise the qualification of Graduate Diploma in Primary Education of Hibernia College for the purpose of employment as a primary teacher.

As the designated authority for recognition of qualifications for purposes of employment for the regulated profession of primary teacher, I have already made a decision to recognise the qualification of Graduate Diploma in Primary Education of Hibernia College for the purpose of employment as a primary teacher, provided all of the conditions set by HETAC are met, including those relating to quality assurance.

As Hibernia College is a private college the question of the level of intake to its courses is a matter for decision by the College itself with due regard to the conditions of the HETAC accreditation.
