Finian McGrath

Question:

107 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the number of people employed in the fishing industry. [31854/03]

Surveys on employment in the Irish seafood industry, comprising fishing, aquaculture, processing and ancillary sectors are carried out by an Bord Iascaigh Mhara, BIM, on a periodic basis.

The most recent survey which was carried out in 2000 estimated that some 15,200 people were employed in the sector in both full-time and part-time jobs. This translates into some 11,920 full-time equivalent jobs.
