Vol. 577 No. 5
111 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if consideration is being given to the provision of a public swimming pool in the Dublin 8 area. [31778/03]
The question of the provision of a public swimming pool in the Dublin 8 area is a matter for Dublin City Council.
Under the local authority swimming pool programme, my Department provides grant-aid towards the capital costs of new pools or the refurbishment of existing pools. The closing date for applications under the current programme was, however, 31 July 2000 and no proposal was received from Dublin City Council in relation to the Dublin 8 area. There are no plans at present to re-open the programme.
112 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if he has had any contact or discussions with Dublin City Council regarding plans to redevelop Crumlin swimming pool and the adjacent facility into a modern youth sports facility; and if moneys from his Department have been committed to such a project. [31779/03]
The question of the redevelopment of Crumlin swimming pool and the adjacent facility is a matter for Dublin City Council.
In so far as the local authority swimming pool programme is concerned, there have been no contacts with my Department on the redevelopment of Crumlin swimming pool. I should point out that the closing date for receipt of applications under this programme was 31 July 2000 and there are no plans at present to re-open the programme.
However, Dublin City Council applied to my Department and was awarded funding of €150,000 under the 2003 sports capital programme to upgrade the existing changing facilities at Willie Pearse Park in Crumlin, which is adjacent to the swimming pool. The 2004 sports capital programme was advertised on 30 November 2003 and it is open to Dublin City Council to apply for additional funding towards the further development of sporting facilities.
113 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the progress to date on rebuilding the Sean Moore swimming pool in Ballyfermot as a sports-youth complex; and the moneys being provided by his Department to further this scheme. [31780/03]
The question of rebuilding this complex is, of course, a matter for Dublin City Council.
Dublin City Council has submitted the contract documents for the provision of a replacement swimming pool in Ballyfermot to my Department. The Department's technical advisers, the Office of Public Works have assessed this documentation and found it to be technically in order. The proposal is now under consideration in my Department.
My Department also administers the sports capital programme and Dublin City Council applied for funding under the 2003 programme towards the development of a sports hall, gymnasium, pitches and ancillary accommodation to be accommodated at the site of the existing swimming pool. This application was not successful. The 2004 sports capital programme was advertised on 30 November 2003 and it is open to Dublin City Council to re-apply for assistance towards this project.
