Vol. 631 No. 5

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31.

I request the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of local and national importance, namely, the threatened closure of Seamount College, Kinvara, County Galway. I ask the Taoiseach and the Minister for Education and Science to intervene and prevent the closure of this college that provides an excellent standard of education for a large catchment area that includes Lisdoonvarna, Fanore, Ballyvaughan and New-Quay, County Clare. The projected growth in the area will not be accommodated in Gort Community College or Calasanctius College, Oranmore, where there is no spare capacity.

I request the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter requiring urgent attention, namely, the need for the Taoiseach to intervene with the Minister for Finance and the Minister of State at the Department of Finance to approve funding for the Clonmel flood alleviation scheme in view of the fact that Clonmel has been devastated by four major floods in the past ten years, that millions of euros of damage has been done to homes and businesses, that insurance cover cannot be obtained in flooded areas, that the completed proposal is currently with the Minister for Finance for approval and in view of the fact that the Minister of State has in this House promised that the scheme would commence in September 2006 and again in spring 2007, promises he has failed to keep.

It is not appropriate to go beyond the notice submitted to the Ceann Comhairle.

This is in the notice.

The notice I received finished with "spring 2007".

I seek leave to move a motion for the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of national importance and concern, namely, the huge price increases in meat, vegetables, fruit, gas and electricity and the 15% increase in rents for Dublin City Council tenants, particularly those living on the north side of Dublin and pensioners. I call on the Government to do something as a matter of priority to assist our elderly, our disabled and working people in general as they must put up with these huge price increases which are affecting everyone's quality of life.

I wish to seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of extreme importance, namely, that the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources immediately intervene with the management of An Post to stop the policy of closing and downgrading rural post officers, such as the recent downgrading of Kilmaley post office in County Clare to post point status, and the closure of Liscannor, Kilamona, Carran, Kilnaboy, Inagh, Kilbaha, Cross, Querrin, Moyasta and Lisdeen post offices in recent years because of the devastation this has caused in local communities.

Hear, hear. An Post has decimated the postal service.

Having considered the matters raised, I have found that they are not in order under Standing Order 31.
