Vol. 711 No. 1

Requests to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 32

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 32. I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to discuss an issue of national importance and concern, namely, the urgent need to actively support the people of Gaza, to deplore the conditions imposed on the people of Gaza by Israel for more than 40 years, most recently the collective punishment of 1.5 million by means of siege, to deplore the activities and killing of innocent civilians by the Israeli forces, to commend the Members of the Oireachtas on their humanitarian and human rights activities and to call on the Irish Government to assert its independent foreign policy on this urgent matter at European and United Nations level.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to discuss the following specific matter of national and international urgency, namely, the need for the Irish Government to demand of Israel — if necessary, to seek international assistance in this regard — the safe passage of the vessel, the MV Rachel Corrie, containing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, which must be allowed to discharge its cargo, to seek a guarantee for the safety in international waters and in Gaza of those Irish citizens among those participating in this humanitarian act and to address the breaches of international and maritime law that have already occurred and the tragic loss of life that has ensued from recent Israeli actions in international waters.

On the basis that the matter I wished to raise under Standing Order 32 has been met by the motion as set out in the amended Order of Business, I am happy to withdraw it.

Having considered the matters raised, they are not in order under Standing Order 32.
