Topical Issue Matters

The following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 27A were received by the Ceann Comhairle, and this is a list of the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Andrew Doyle - the impact of proposed legislation in U.S. on the availability of J1 visas to Irish students; (2) Deputy Jerry Buttimer - the need for an awareness campaign in relation to HIV and AIDS in view of the increase of newly diagnosed infections in 2012; (3) Deputy Patrick Nulty - the need to maintain history as a compulsory subject for the junior cycle at second level; (4) Deputy Thomas Pringle - the need to keep St. Agnes Special Needs Pre School in Donegal Town open; (5) Deputy Thomas P. Broughan - the need to provide additional resources to An Garda Síochána and to review legislation on the sale of alcohol in seaside resorts including Portmarnock and Howth, County Dublin; (6) Deputies Stephen S. Donnelly, Jonathan O'Brien, Joan Collins, Clare Daly and Mick Wallace - the need to reverse the cuts in support hours for children with special educational needs, announced yesterday by the National Council for Special Education; (7) Deputy Pat Breen - the need to provide for a pension scheme in respect of supervisors on community employment schemes; (8) Deputy Robert Troy - the actions being taken to prevent the decline in town centres; (9) Deputy Michael Moynihan - the need to honour programme for Government commitments with regard to home helps; (10) Deputy Barry Cowen - the need to ensure that staff in vocational education committees have the necessary information and support for the forthcoming mergers of the VECs; and (11) Deputy Richard Boyd Barrett - the need to increase the rate of corporation tax here.

The matters raised by Deputies Jerry Buttimer; Thomas P. Broughan; Stephen S. Donnelly, Jonathan O'Brien, Joan Collins, Clare Daly and Mick Wallace; and Robert Troy have been selected for discussion.
