Vol. 818 No. 3

Sittings and Business of Dáil: Motion

It is proposed that, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders or the Order of the Dáil of this day, No. 11c, motion re allocation of time for Committee and Remaining Stages of the Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2013, has been circulated on a supplementary Order Paper and shall be taken now, without debate, and the Dáil shall sit at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Is the motion agreed?

It is not agreed. I wish to make a quick point. This is not the way to do business. Introducing a time motion at this late stage, even though it may have been agreed by the Whips, is not acceptable. We are confined in the number of hours that we are supposed to squeeze in all of the amendments and discussions on Committee and Report Stages despite a promise by the Government that it would approach it in a different way.

The motion has been put.

I wish to respond. In fairness to the Fianna Fáil Party and the Independent Group, they turned up this morning at the Whips meeting to go through this. Sinn Féin had no representative at the Whips meeting this morning.

I wish to set the record straight. I was stuck in this Chamber discussing the Social Welfare and Pensions Bill because the Government Chief Whip scheduled the Whips meeting at a time when the debate was already under way. I also said that I did not object to the time motion in itself. The difficulty is the fact that we are limited in time tomorrow. I call on the Minister of State, Deputy Kehoe to withdraw his remarks. Our deputy Whip, who was the only other person who could have attended, is in hospital today.

Is this new politics?
