Vol. 911 No. 1

Corporate Manslaughter Bill 2016: First Stage

I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to create the indictable offence of corporate manslaughter by an undertaking, to create the indictable offence of grossly negligent management causing death by a high managerial agent of the undertaking, and to provide for related matters.

Is the Bill opposed?

Question put and agreed to.

Since this is a Private Members' Bill, Second Stage must, under Standing Orders, be taken in Private Members' time.

I move: "That the Bill be taken in Private Members' time."

Does Deputy O'Brien want to say a few words on the Bill?

Since 2008, there has been over 400 work-related fatalities and the Law Reform Commission, as far back as 2005, identified the need for legislation for the offence of corporate manslaughter. The Bill that my party has produced today is in 13 Parts and it outlines the offence of corporate manslaughter and also the penalties associated with it.

Question put and agreed to.
