Election of Vice Chairman

I propose that we commence with the election of Vice Chairman of this committee. Under Standing Orders, the committee may elect a Vice Chairman. I ask for nominations for the position.

Senator Erin McGreehan and Deputy Pauline Tully are nominated and seconded for the position of Vice Chairman.

I also sit on the Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach. They made the decision to have a Vice Chairman who is a Senator and a Vice Chairman who is a Deputy. They act as joint Vice Chairmen. That may be another option available to the committee.

I thank Senator Higgins and I appreciate that. I do not have any difficulty with that. I would like to have as much unity as is humanly possible for the purposes of dealing with the challenges ahead. I do not want to divide the committee in its first meeting. If it is agreeable to members that we have a Vice Chairman from the Seanad and a Vice Chairman from the Dáil, then I have no difficulty with that. I am in the committee's hands. Is that agreed? Agreed.

I congratulate Senator Erin McGreehan on being elected as Vice Chairman from the Seanad and Deputy Pauline Tully on being elected as Vice Chairman from the Dáil.

I congratulate both.

I propose that we go into private session to deal with some housekeeping matters. Is that agreed? Agreed.

The joint committee went into private session at 4.35 p.m. and adjourned at 5.23 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, 21 October 2020.
