JOINT COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT debate -
Wednesday, 22 Feb 2006

Business of Joint Committee.

Have members any other items to raise? No.

Members may recall that when we last met the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Roche, in December, our discussion made a number of references to the report by the European Environmental Agency entitled, European Environment State and Outlook 2005. At our next meeting the author of that report will make a presentation. She is Professor Jacqueline McGlade, executive director of the European Environmental Agency, who will fly to Dublin specially to present her report. The clerk will e-mail members the web address for the report. I recommend that members make themselves familiar with the report in advance of the meeting.

In addition we will have a number of EU proposals on the agenda. We will examine air quality with officials from the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

Three other EU proposals have already been scrutinised and we need to agree the reports of that scrutiny. They are COM (2003) 379 in relation to shipments of hazardous waste, COM (2003) 667 in relation to extending the EU's LIFE financial instrument, and COM (2003) 723 in relation to batteries and accumulators.

The joint committee adjourned at 12.08 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 1 March 2006.
