JOINT COMMITTEE ON EUROPEAN AFFAIRS debate -
Wednesday, 15 Dec 2004

Business of the Joint Committee.

I propose to defer consideration of the minutes to the next meeting. The next item is correspondence received by the joint committee and circulated at the previous meeting. We received correspondence from the Ambassador of Turkey with regard to the joint committee's recent visit to Turkey. It is proposed to note the correspondence and thank the Ambassador for forwarding it to the joint committee. Is that agreed? Agreed.

The joint committee has received correspondence from the Ceann Comhairle regarding the Crans Montana forum. I propose to note the correspondence until we discuss it in January. Is that agreed? Agreed.

We have received correspondence from the Ambassador of Croatia regarding negotiations towards the accession of Croatia to the European Union. I propose to note the statement by the Croatian Parliament on negotiations between Croatia and the European Union. The joint committee awaits with interest the decisions to be taken at the European Council on 17 December. Is that agreed? Agreed.

We have received correspondence from Mrs. Hester Menninga enclosing a letter on behalf of COSAC regarding the implementation of the declaration to raise national European awareness. I propose that we return to this matter during our consideration of a work programme in early January. Is that agreed? Agreed. Is there any other business?

I propose that we consider the position of Croatia and other countries which wish to join the European Union as part of work plan to avoid the circumstances that arose with regard to Turkey.

That is fine.

The joint committee went into private session at 3.30 p.m. and adjourned at 3.31 p.m. sine die.
