JOINT COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS debate -
Tuesday, 27 Sep 2005

Business of Joint Committee.

Apologies have been received from Deputies Michael D. Higgins, Quinn and Durkan and Senator Norris. Before proceeding with the minutes of the last meeting and the rest of the business of the committee, I want to welcome yesterday's development in the peace process. This is something for which we have all been waiting and is a very important step forward. The importance of this final act of decommissioning was acknowledged by both the Irish and British Governments. General John De Chastelain did a good job under very difficult circumstances in delivering the message yesterday and at subsequent meetings. I hope that the peace process can now move forward and that all parties can engage in building the peace and make the institutions set up under the Good Friday Agreement work for everybody. That is particularly important at this stage. The way is clear for that. It will take some time for the enormity of what has happened to sink in for people in some quarters but I believe it is real. We look forward to the political process taking the centre stage from this point forward in the interests of all the peoples on this island.

Deputy Olivia Mitchell is substituting for Deputy Durkan from whom apologies were received.

The minutes of the meeting of 20 September have been circulated. Are they agreed? Agreed. If there are no matters arising, we will proceed.
