JOINT COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS debate -
Tuesday, 10 Oct 2006

Business of Joint Committee.

Apologies have been received from Senators O'Rourke and Bradford, for whom Senators Leyden and Coghlan, respectively, are substituting.

The minutes of the meeting of 19 September have been circulated. As there are no matters arising from them, I take it they are agreed. Agreed.

Before we proceed, I wish to mention that I have received a good deal of correspondence in recent weeks from constituents who have requested that the situation in Darfur be examined. Will there be time to discuss that matter today or is it intended that we will discuss it at a future date?

We can list it for the next meeting.

I thank the Chairman.

I concur with Senator Norris's request. I have a similar request. I have received correspondence, and I am sure the same is the case with other members, from the Congolese community who are concerned about ethnic cleansing and all that is associated with it, that seems to be taking place on a huge scale in the Congo at present. Will it be possible to arrange to meet a delegation of representatives of that community who are living here as soon as possible?

We can agree on that. The Deputy might forward me a copy of that correspondence.

I have already done so.

I thank the Deputy. I remind members and those in the Visitors Gallery to ensure that their mobile phones are switched off completely for the duration of the meeting as they cause interference with the recording equipment in the committee rooms, even if they are on silent mode.
