Joint Committee on the Secondary Legislation of the European Communities debate -
Wednesday, 19 Dec 1979

Debates in Seanad.

The point here is that we have to invite the Leader of the Seanad to take the necessary steps to ensure that an appropriate Order is substituted for the existing Order of the Seanad which ensures that this Joint Committee can have a debate on its Reports on request. The existing Order expires on 31 December and we wish to extend it for another year.

There seems to be an important time factor. It is unlikely that we will sit beyond this week and maybe not beyond tomorrow, so it seems desirable that the motion to extend it be moved tomorrow.

Had we any word with Senator Ryan?

Am I correct in thinking that Senator Ryan moved the motion on the last occasion, because he was at the time a member of and indeed the vice-chairman of the Joint Committee?

I understood that he did so as the Leader of the House and, as such, he should be invited to do it again. I will go to Senator Ryan after this meeting with a copy of the last Order if you so authorise me.

Proposal agreed.
