Joint Committee on the Secondary Legislation of the European Communities debate -
Tuesday, 16 Dec 1980

Development of Indigenous Coalfields.

We have an apology from Deputy Oliver Flanagan and a rather interesting letter from him dated 11th December, 1980 as follows:—

I note that energy matters will be discussed at Joint Committee Meeting on Tuesday, 16th Dec., 1980 at 6 p.m. I note also Senator Mulcahy's draft report on proposals relating to energy matters. I would like the Committee to consider the following resolution:

"That the Joint Committee strongly recommend the full scale development of the Leinster Coal Fields and other coal fields in the State and that substantial National and European investment be undertaken so as to ensure that our coal fields will be fully developed with special reference to the fact that Irish anthracite has been assessed by experts as the best in Europe outside the Ruhr Valley, and as we import anthracite from Germany, Britain, South Africa, and other countries we feel that special attention should be given to long term development and secure employment for our miners. We further feel that if private enterprise cannot undertake long term development, that the State should introduce the necessary legislation to proceed with full scale development".

I strongly recommend a full discussion on the importance of this matter and I further feel that coal burning stations where necessary should be provided.

It is a pity he was not here when we were discussing the proposals on energy. It should be referred to Senator Mulcahy's Sub-Committee for examination by way of a supplementary report because it is a valuable suggestion.

I agree with that. We will have a look at it. There is not much point in talking about it today.
