SEANAD RESUMES. - THE ADJOURNMENT.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

On the question as to when we shall meet again, I understand that the Government have a Money Bill which they are sending up to the Seanad, and which is urgent. It will not be ready for to-morrow. I understand it will not be ready before next week. They also anticipate that the Malicious Injuries Compensation Bill, will be out of their House and in the printer's hands as finished by Monday next. It has been suggested to me that it would be desirable that the Seanad should give that Bill at least a Second Reading next week. In that event, it would not be necessary for us to meet to-morrow, but it would be necessary for us to meet on Wednesday. I think, probably, one day would be sufficient to get through the work we would have. Then we could adjourn over the Easter Recess.

I think the question of our adjournment should be considered in relation to whether this Criminal Injuries Bill is a Money Bill or not.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

I am not giving any opinion about that, but I understand from Senator Douglas that the Compensation portion of it—what I might call the legal provisions of it—are dealt with in one Bill, and that then there is a Supplementary Money Bill to carry out the money provisions. Apparently the compensation portion of it would not be a Money Bill. That is the position as I understand it.

I did not mean to convey that the Money Bill that was coming was necessarily the Money Bill connected with the Malicious Injuries. I do not know the facts about that, but I do not think there is any question that it is not a Money Bill.

I cannot speak for the Ceann Comhairle, but I think the Seanad may be satisfied that it is not a Money Bill.

I move that the Seanad adjourn until 3 o'clock on Wednesday next.

Agreed.

The Seanad adjourned at 6.15 p.m.
