Vol. 1 No. 31

CIVIC GUARD (ACQUISITION OF PREMISES) BILL, 1923. - THE SEANAD RESUMES.

Mr. O'HIGGINS

This Bill is rather important from the point of view of facilitating public administration generally, and if there is no objection I would suggest that Senators might suspend Standing Orders with a view to completing the other stages.

I beg to move:—"That the Standing Orders be suspended in respect of this Bill with a view to carrying it through its final stages."

I second the motion.

Agreed.

Motion made and question put:
"That the Bill as reported from Committee be received for final consideration."
Agreed.
Motion made and question put:
"That the Bill be now passed."
Agreed.

I presume that if there are any instances throughout the country, and there must be several of them, where the old police barracks can be utilised again, the Government will take steps to rebuild them, and thus give a good deal of employment. They would probably be better buildings than could be got by acquiring other people's premises.

Mr. O'HIGGINS

The work of repairing the old police barracks is being put in hands immediately. The Senator is probably right that the vast majority would make more suitable premises for the Civic Guard than the premises already occupied.
