Vol. 1 No. 40

ACCOMMODATION FOR OIREACHTAS.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

The Seanad will remember that there was a Committee appointed for the purpose of cooperating with a Committee of the Dáil to deal with a question that was referred to us by the Executive Council, namely the consideration of the future accommodation of the Oireachtas. The Joint Committee met and came to the conclusion to report—that report I communicated to the Seanad—that they had not time to consider the question adequately as to the temporary accommodation, but they recommended, in view of the permanent home of the Oireachtas, that a Commission should be appointed at the earliest date to inquire into and report upon the available sites, and also to furnish an estimate of the time and expense it would take to make the old Parliament House in College Green suitable for the purpose. That report came before the Dáil, and the Dáil, at the request of the President, requested the Committee to re-open the matter and to consider it for another week. The Seanad adopted a similar resolution and the Joint Committee met again. After a little more consideration they again reported that the time at their disposal was not sufficient, and accordingly the matter has now dropped for the present. I mention that because it disposes of the Committee that this Seanad appointed, so far as the Committee is concerned.

On that point, do I understand that the report which we agreed upon has fallen through altogether or does the Government propose to do anything on it?

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

That report has been sent forward. The Committee discharged its functions or was discharged. The Committee sent forward that resolution and the Government were in receipt of it. For what it is worth it is their report.

Then we may take it that the Government may act upon it?

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

I could not promise that.

It will be for the new Government. There is nothing further to be done about it at present.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

I think not. I do not see what we could do.
