Vol. 4 No. 18

THE HOUSING BILL.

As the President is here, I would like to ask him when we may expect to have the Housing Bill before us in the Seanad.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

I understand it is expected that the Committee Stage of the Bill will be concluded in the Dáil to-morrow.

I was hoping to put down a motion asking for an early consideration of this Bill by the Seanad, if it were possible to have it finished in the Dáil this week. In that case I would have to ask if it were possible for the Seanad to meet some day next week in order to deal with that Bill. Of course, if that interfered with arrangements made by the Seanad, the Bill would have to be postponed until after Easter.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

Is this Bill so urgent that it could not wait until after Easter? It certainly was the general idea in the Seanad that there would be no meeting next week, and I am quite sure that many Senators have made their arrangements for Easter on that understanding. Of course, public duty must be the first consideration, but if it would be no great disadvantage, or hindrance, to this Bill, I think it ought to be left over until after Easter, when it could be taken up immediately in this House. We have gone a long way to meet the convenience of the Government in putting through all their Bills, as far as we reasonably could, to-day. Of course, if the President says that there is some special reason why this Bill should be passed through the Seanad before Easter, I am quite certain the Seanad will consider that, but I would not like him to put an undue burden on Senators because they have already yielded very far in regard to other matters.

I am not in a position to say that the Bill will pass through the Dáil this week.

AN CATHAOIRLEACH

If that is so, I am afraid you are out of court.
